Sustainable Watch

Why Longevity Is Just the Beginning

A sustainable watch isn’t simply a watch made from a specific material. Sustainability begins much earlier: with the question of how long a product can be used. A watch that is worn, maintained, and repaired for many years conserves resources far more effectively than a short-lived product that must be replaced after just a few years.
That’s why every sustainable watch starts with a durable concept. This applies to the design as well as the construction, the choice of materials, and the availability of replacement parts.

High-Quality Materials

Cases, backs, bands, dials, and hands must function reliably over the long term. Stainless steel, titanium, sapphire crystal, and high-quality mechanical movements are therefore more than just technical features. They are the foundation that ensures a watch can be worn for a long time.
For cases and steel bands, CiRCULA relies on materials such as 316L stainless steel or titanium, and for watch crystals, on scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Leather straps are manufactured in southern Germany and vegetable-tanned.

Repair Instead of Replace

A mechanical watch is designed to be serviced. This fundamentally distinguishes it from many short-lived products. During a service, the movement is cleaned, inspected, re-oiled, and adjusted. This allows a high-quality watch to function reliably for decades.
Sustainability therefore also means keeping spare parts in stock and making repairs feasible whenever reasonable. CiRCULA emphasizes that it uses high-quality movements that are worth servicing or repairing, and that spare parts are kept in stock for several years.

Short Supply Chains and Regional Manufacturing

The manufacturing process itself also plays an important role. Short supply chains, reliable partners, and local value creation reduce unnecessary transportation and strengthen specialized craftsmanship.
CiRCULA manufactures and tests its watches in Pforzheim. Each movement is adjusted by watchmakers, and each watch is tested for water resistance before it leaves the factory.

Less Waste, More Second Chances

Sustainable manufacturing also means not wasting resources unnecessarily. Components, prototypes, demonstration models, or returned items can often be reused or sold as B-grade goods instead of being disposed of. This way, a small mistake doesn’t automatically turn into waste.
A lot can also be achieved in packaging and administration. Reusable paper boxes, digital processes, paper tape made from recycled material, and biodegradable packing material are small measures that, when added up, make a difference. According to its own information, CiRCULA uses, among other things, FLO-PAK BIO-8—paper tape made from recycled material—electricity from renewable energy sources, and, for local deliveries, primarily e-bikes.

Climate Neutrality as a Path

Sustainability is not a state that is achieved once and for all. It is a process. CiRCULA has set specific goals for this: By 2030, production and packaging are to gradually become plastic-free and climate-neutral. This includes, among other things, recycled or biodegradable cases, climate-neutral heating, straps made from recycled materials, and—in the future—cases, dials, and hands made from recycled materials.

Conclusion

A sustainable watch isn’t created by a single “green” component. It’s the result of an entire system: durable materials, repairable technology, timeless design, responsible partners, short supply chains, and processes that conserve resources as much as possible. Ultimately, the most sustainable watch is the one that doesn’t need to be replaced—because it works for a long time, is enjoyed by its owner, and is professionally maintained when necessary.
