CiRCULA Limited Editions

When Exceptional Watches Become Coveted Collector’s Pieces

Some watches are purchased because they reliably tell time, look great, and prove their worth in everyday life. Others tell a story as well. They commemorate an anniversary, draw inspiration from a historic design, are created in collaboration with renowned partners, or feature a dial that exists nowhere else in quite the same form. This is where the special appeal of limited-edition watches begins. Over the past several years, CiRCULA has introduced a range of editions with production runs ranging from a single unique piece to 170 sets. These include dive watches with meteorite, aventurine, and mother-of-pearl dials, distinctive interpretations of successful tool watches, collaborations with other members of the watch industry, as well as seven elaborate hand-guilloché masterpieces. Almost all of these editions are now sold out. This not only demonstrates the demand for limited-edition CiRCULA watches. It also shows that many watch enthusiasts are increasingly viewing the brand from a new perspective: no longer solely as an exciting independent watchmaker, but also as a manufacturer of watches that can occupy a special place within a collection.

What is a limited edition when it comes to watches?

A limited edition is a watch whose production run is strictly limited from the outset. Once production ends, the model will no longer be manufactured in this version as part of regular production.

The limited run may consist of just a few hundred pieces, a very small series, or even a single piece. These watches often feature a unique serial number, a special engraving, or a certificate confirming their inclusion in the edition.

However, a small production run alone does not make a watch a sought-after collector’s item. What matters is whether an edition has its own distinct identity. A unique material, a traceable history, a relevant occasion, or an unusual collaboration can give a limited-edition watch a significance that goes beyond its mere availability.

Why are limited-edition CiRCULA watches appealing to collectors?

CiRCULA combines the flexibility and close ties to the community that many watch enthusiasts appreciate in independent brands with a brand history dating back to 1955. The mechanical watches are developed, assembled, regulated, and tested in Pforzheim.

This combination of heritage, distinctive design, and limited production runs provides an intriguing foundation for collectors. Furthermore, the editions are not created according to a rigid formula. Some focus on exceptional materials, while others draw on the brand’s history or are developed in collaboration with partners and members of the watch community.

In this way, each edition becomes a snapshot of the brand’s evolution.

AquaSport II: Extraordinary Dials and a Brand History Brought to Life

The AquaSport II is the centerpiece of the CiRCULA Limited Editions released to date. This is no coincidence. Its design, inspired by 1970s diving watches, provides a distinctive backdrop that allows exceptional colors and materials to really shine.

AquaSport II Meteorit LE – 99 One-of-a-Kind Items from Space

The dial of the AquaSport II Meteorite LE was crafted from genuine metallic meteorite. Due to the material’s unique crystal structure, each of the 99 dials is visibly different from the others. While the watch’s design was identical, the surface of each piece was unique.

Such natural structures are particularly interesting to collectors because they create a dual form of rarity: the series is limited in number, and within this series, no two dials are exactly alike.

AquaSport II Aventurin LE – a night sky on your wrist

The AquaSport II Aventurin LE was also limited to 99 pieces. Its blue aventurine dial, with its delicate inclusions, creates a deep, sparkling appearance reminiscent of a clear starry sky.

Here, too, the natural material ensures that each dial has its own unique texture. The Aventurin Edition thus combined the robust construction of a diver's watch with an unusually elegant and almost cosmic effect.

AquaSport II Mother of Pearl LE – 70 dials, 70 different light effects

The AquaSport II Mother of Pearl Limited Edition was created to celebrate CiRCULA's 70th anniversary. Each of the 70 dials was crafted from genuine mother-of-pearl.

Depending on the light and viewing angle, different shades of green, blue, violet, or gold appear. As a result, the dial appears deep and dark one moment and subdued the next, then vibrant and rich in color the next. In this edition, too, the natural material makes each piece a unique work of art.

AquaSport II Original LE – The Return of a Historic Design

The AquaSport II Original LE, also limited to 70 pieces, forges a direct link to the brand’s history. Its dial echoes the layout of historic CiRCULA dive watches from the 1970s.

The shade of blue with a slight violet sheen also has a historical background: it is inspired by the color that the original blue of older CiRCULA models has developed over the decades. This edition is therefore not just a retro watch, but a deliberately designed fusion of a historical model and a modern diver’s watch.

AquaSport II Purple 1/1 – an unplanned one-of-a-kind piece

The rarest CiRCULA edition did not originate on the drawing board. While blue dials were being manufactured, a single piece exhibited a color variation that could not be fully explained. The result was an intensely purple dial that was neither planned nor intended to be reproduced.

CiRCULA built a fully functional AquaSport II using this dial and guaranteed that no other AquaSport II in this violet version would be produced. The one-of-a-kind piece was subsequently auctioned off. After 120 bids, the auction closed at 17,851 euros.

This extraordinary result is not a general benchmark for the value of limited-edition CiRCULA watches. However, it impressively demonstrates the attention that a credibly documented one-of-a-kind piece can generate within the watch community.

ProTrail Editions: Toolwatch character with its own identity

With the ProTrail, CiRCULA applied the concept of limited editions to a modern field watch. Rather than focusing on unique natural materials, the emphasis here was on functionality, color, and collaboration with people from the international watch industry.

ProTrail Black Old Radium LE – 99 Pieces

The ProTrail Black Old Radium LE combined a black appearance with warm Old Radium luminous material. This color scheme visually evokes the aged luminous material found on historic military watches, without sacrificing modern luminosity or contemporary materials.

The ProTrail Black OR was the result of a community vote during the ProTrail’s development. The community was surveyed and voted on design decisions. A slight majority favored the current dial design, featuring two numeric rings, and many preferred the index design of the ProTrail OR LE.

This contrast gave the technically modern ProTrail a distinctly more historical feel. The limited run of 99 pieces made this color variant a clearly defined and coordinated edition created by our community.

ProTrail Micro Praha LE – 50 Pieces

The ProTrail Micro Praha LE was created in collaboration with Micro Praha, a Prague-based watch retailer and community hub. Limited to 50 pieces, this edition features a textured dial with gold-colored hands and was developed specifically for this collaboration.

Collaboration models are often particularly interesting to collectors because they represent more than just a model series. They also document a connection between a brand, a partner, and a specific regional or international watch scene.

SuperSport Gray and Red: Editions of a Genuine Super Compressor Watch

The SuperSport plays a special role within the CiRCULA collection. Its design follows the classic Super-Compressor principle: as water pressure increases, the spring-loaded case back is pressed more firmly against the gasket. The SuperSport Gray LE and the SuperSport Red LE were each limited to 99 pieces.

While the gray edition emphasized the watch’s technical character, the red variant made a bold statement with its burgundy sandwich dial. The majority of our community preferred the watch without a date display.

The SuperSport Red LE also featured a color-coordinated date disc. Both models demonstrate that a limited edition doesn’t necessarily require an entirely new watch model. A consistently executed combination of colors and materials can give a familiar design its own distinct personality.

ProLab: 170 years, two brands, 170 sets

ProLab was created during the joint anniversary year of Laco and CiRCULA: Laco’s 100th anniversary coincided with CiRCULA’s 70th. Accordingly, the project was limited to 170 sets.

Each set consisted of two watches that highlighted the distinct identities of the two independent Pforzheim-based brands while also being harmoniously coordinated in design. One watch reinterpreted a modern field watch, while the other drew on the classic design of a pilot’s watch with a “Baumuster B” dial.

Shared details on the case backs, along with a numbered coin, united the two watches into a cohesive collector’s set. ProLab was thus more than just a special color or a model with an anniversary engraving. The edition marked the first time a comprehensive collaboration between two independent German watch brands with shared roots in Pforzheim had been documented.

Facet Guilloche LE: Seven handcrafted masterpieces

The smallest regularly scheduled series among the CiRCULA editions to date is the Facet Guilloche LE. Only seven pieces were produced.

The dial is made of solid sterling silver and was hand-finished by Jochen Benzinger in Pforzheim on a historic guilloché machine dating from 1900. The moiré pattern used references the Enz, Nagold, and Würm—the three rivers that converge in Pforzheim.

Guilloché is not a printed or machine-reproduced surface pattern. Each line is created directly through the interplay of tool, material, and hand movement. As a result, each of the seven dials possesses small, individual characteristics.

The Facet Guilloche LE thus combines four aspects that can be particularly relevant for a collector’s watch: an extremely limited production run, traditional handcrafted work, a clearly documented provenance, and collaboration with an internationally renowned specialist in his craft.

Is CiRCULA evolving from a microbrand to a collector's brand?

The term “microbrand” is not clearly defined in the watch world. It generally refers to independent brands with modest production volumes, direct contact with the community, and a comparatively lean distribution structure. In this sense, CiRCULA possesses many of the qualities that watch enthusiasts value in successful microbrands. At the same time, the brand’s history dates back to 1955. CiRCULA thus combines the agility of an independent brand with a long-standing watchmaking tradition in Pforzheim. The evolution of its collections shows that perceptions are also changing. Buyers are no longer interested solely in technical specifications, features, and value for money. They keep an eye on new releases, explore earlier models, and specifically seek out models that are already sold out. These are typical characteristics of an emerging collector’s culture.

When does a limited-edition watch become a collector's item?

Whether a watch will be perceived as a collector’s item in the long term cannot be determined solely by its production volume. Several factors are particularly relevant: A credible limited edition: The announced production run should be verifiable and not later undermined by nearly identical reissues. A unique story: Anniversaries, collaborations, historical inspirations, or unusual backstories enhance the intrinsic significance of an edition. A Distinctive Difference: Unique materials, colors, manufacturing techniques, or design details should clearly distinguish the edition from the standard model. An Active Community: The more deeply watch enthusiasts engage with a brand and its models, the more likely earlier editions are to be documented, sought after, and passed on within the community. A complete set of accessories: Original packaging, edition number, additional straps, and other documentation can play an important role for collectors.

Are limited-edition CiRCULA watches an investment?

A limited-edition watch is not automatically a safe investment. Even a small production run does not guarantee that the market price will rise later on. The potential resale value depends, among other things, on the condition of the watch, the completeness of the set, the demand for that specific model, and the brand’s long-term performance. In the case of very rare editions, there is the additional factor that only a few sales take place. As a result, it is often impossible to determine a reliable market price. Anyone purchasing a CiRCULA Limited Edition should therefore choose it primarily because they are drawn to the watch itself, its design, and its history. While an increase in value is possible, it should not be the sole reason for purchasing it.

Conclusion: Each edition captures a special moment

From 99 dials made of genuine meteorite to a single, randomly formed violet specimen: The CiRCULA Limited Editions released to date demonstrate just how differently a limited-edition watch can be interpreted.  Some editions thrive on unusual materials.

Others evoke historical models, are created in collaboration with partners from the watchmaking world, or preserve traditional craftsmanship. What unites them is strictly limited availability and a story that goes beyond the respective production model.

The fact that nearly all editions are sold out underscores the growing interest. Above all, however, it shows that a collector’s culture is increasingly developing around CiRCULA.

A CiRCULA edition is thus not merely a rarer variant of a well-known watch. It is a numbered chapter in the brand’s history—created to be worn, preserved, and passed on.
